The Model

Human Performance Improvment is what we do. Human Performance Technology (HPT) is how we do it. HPT is a scientifically based systematic process for helping organizations reduce costly human behavior in order to identify and implement the most effective strategies to improve worker accomplishments.
  • Scientific because it is important to understand that this discipline is rooted in the behavioral and natural sciences.
  • Systematic process - See the HPT Model below, the model is a process that is used by any practitioner and is replicable from one practitioner to the next.
  • Reduce costly behavior – Every business is concerned about the profit margin or bottom line.  Doing those things that have the greatest potential for increasing profits for the least amount of money necessary.
  • Improved worker accomplishments – The end product is to manipulate the behavior of workers in order to get the best quality accomplishments as a result.
The ISPI has adopted the HPT model developed by Van Tiem, Dessenger and Moseley.

A Guide to Improving People, Processes and Performance, Washington, D.C.: ISPI.

Before identifying any solution it is important to analyze the problem.  What we are looking to do is to clearly understand the gap in performance.  What is actually happening on the job and what is it we want the performer on the job to do.  Based on understanding what the gap is we can identify solutions to closing this gap.  It is important to remember that to be efficient we should be looking to close the performance gap that provides the greatest return on our solution investment.

Attend a chapter meeting to learn how you can utilize the principles of HPT to improve the performance of your employes while reducing cost to your organization.
